True love

While teaching Middle School math is one of my passions, I also thoroughly enjoy the privilege of working closely with the students on the annual spring musical. This year the presentation is Disney’s “Frozen”. The cast, choir, dancers, media and backstage personnel, and the teachers have worked incredibly hard to bring the fruits of their labors to you this next weekend.

While Disney is not known for offering overtly Christ-centered productions, it is often fairly straightforward to derive themes that mirror our walk of faith. The plot centers on Queen Elsa who has the power to wield ice. When she accidentally curses her town to Infinite winter, she flees to an isolated ice tower. Her younger sister, Anna, goes on a mission to find Elsa and restore summer to the kingdom. She teams up with Kristoff, the mountaineer, and his reindeer. They meet Olaf, a loveable snowman, and fight together to save their village from eternal winter.

True love is talked about throughout the musical. While there is always romantic love in Disney movies- you’ve got to have a princess and prince– it’s SISTER LOVE that steals the show. Anna sacrifices herself to save her sister when Hans is about to kill Elsa– and the act of true love breaks the curse over Arendale.

And we know that there is no act more pure than when Jesus gave his life for us on the cross. While we aren’t cursed to live in eternal winter, our hearts CAN be frozen and turn cold toward God when we choose not to serve Him. But believers can take heart that when Jesus gave his life for us on the cross, he took away our sins, and the curse of sin is broken. He melts our hearts and helps us to understand what true love really is.
