Hello Sonrise Families,
For many of you who don’t know me, my name is Jerry Hsu. I am the Middle School Science teacher, and this is my first year at Sonrise! I was saved when I was 24. I never grew up going to church. Having not been discipled by Christ, naturally, I became a disciple of the world.
The world, with all its alluring temptations, its glittering things, its false promises of joy and satisfaction, was more than happy to take me in under its wings. By grace, and grace alone (sola gratia), did God rescue me from this path towards death, and make alive what was once dead.
Often, everything around us becomes too quickly normalized. The feeling when we first were saved, once a powerful fire igniting our hearts to praise and action, now a distant memory that we struggle to treasure and keep ever close to our hearts. The feeling of a brand new car: joy, excitement, novelty; now forgotten as we grumble our way through traffic.
I wish to encourage you all with the simple fact that your child is here, at Sonrise, a Christian school. What a blessing it is that our children can be discipled by Christ at such a young age! How quickly this can be normalized. How quickly this can be forgotten as we worry about our child’s grades or how they’re doing in sports.
Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. -1 Timothy 4:7b-8
Let us cast our anxieties about grades, sports, & extracurriculars upon the Lord, and let us remember that our children are here, receiving training in godliness, that it may hold promise for this life, and for the life to come.
Warm regards,
Mr. Hsu
Middle School Teacher
